"This is where the groupies sit."
I admit it... I am a Starbucks groupie. I had never understood the attraction of being a groupie until I became one. Just imagine, knowing the inner working of your favorite band; how they practice, what they eat, what they think about their music, their fans, their managers. It is very compelling. Groupie is a good description too... I often see the same group of people enjoying their coffee and doing their work at my local Starbucks. Some are business people, some are professors, some are moms. Whatever their reason for being there, it is nice to see them every week; nice to share the little parts of our daily lives, like what the weather is doing or what our weekend plans are. At the very beginning of Betting Jessica, there is a funny section where Jessica goes into what she feels should be her 'local' bar. Since she's never actually been inside, she knows she should not be surprised that no one calls out her name when she gets there. She wants to confort of being recognized, even i I am glad, that for me, my local bar has turned out to be Starbucks.

"Can you help me find the book Messipies?"
What a great title. It's like someone watched my sister or husband in the kitchen and decided to make a cookbook based on it. For my part, I need absolute order to cook. No dirty pots in the sink or drips on the counter. I line up my ingredients before I ever start baking; flour, sugar, baking powder, vanilla, milk... It can drive people a little crazy, I admit I can't even contemplate a recipe unless the dishwasher's unloaded. That said... the title Messipies alone intrigues me and makes me want to track the book down. I think it's incredible that a book's name alone can make me pick it up and read it, especially since it has to be a pretty good story to distract me from my writing. Yesterday, at the library, my husband found a book, Definitely not Mr. Darcy. Sometimes, like in this case, the name is so descriptive you know exactly what you are going to get. He asked if I wnted to read the back cover to see what it was about, and I said I didn't need to... I knew I would like it. Other titles, like Little Blog on the Prairie, are just so funny or interesting you have to read it. There are certain titles though that are bound to make me put the book back on the shelf - Night of the anything for example. I would hate for my books to end up in that last category. Really sad! So, how about this. In case you haven't noticed, there is a comments section at the bottom of this blog. I'd love to hear your thoughts on Betting Jessica... there's still time to change the title if you can come up with something better. Just read the story description on the home page and leave a comment. Who knows.... your title may be the one that forces people to read my fantastic story... when I get it kindled. |
