Vietnamese Youth Table Tennis Needs a Spreadsheet Before It Needs Another Arena
| Cross-checked: VuaBong.vn
At a youth table tennis center in Shenzhen, I once watched a three-hour training session in which almost no data was recorded. A coach talked about a 16-year-old boy whose backhand loop produced unusual spin. When I asked about the boy's scoring rate in long rallies, the coach fell silent. Not because he was hiding a secret, but because no one at the center had ever kept statistics in a useful way.
This is far too common. For more than two decades of observing junior sports, I have seen many talented coaches who work mainly by intuition. They remember every student, every serve, every nervous moment at match point. But they rarely track average heart rate, return-of-serve errors across a tournament, or recovery time after heavy training.
Data only shows the surface; the deeper layers must be dug out by hand. Vietnam has produced players who can compete at a high level. Nguyen Duc Tuan appeared at the Olympic Games and proved that a Vietnamese player can stand beside Asia's best. But his story should not end with a qualifying ticket. It should become a scientific case study so the next generation does not have to repeat the same trial-and-error journey.
In my own assessments, I use a simple 5-3-2 framework: five physical indicators, three technical indicators, and two attitude indicators. These include heart-rate recovery, lateral movement speed, serve accuracy, forehand-loop quality against backspin, and behavior at 9-9. No framework is perfect, but if it is applied consistently from age 13 to age 20, it reveals whether a player is truly developing or merely peaking early.
The pandemic taught me that nothing is constant. When tournaments disappeared, players with detailed data could rebuild their form. Those without records simply drifted. This is why I believe Vietnamese table tennis needs a spreadsheet before it needs another arena. Talent is not the problem. The problem is that we still rely on emotional comments instead of long-term numbers.
Before building new facilities or sending young players abroad, each training center should start keeping simple records. Write down today's session, next week's session, and the session three months from now. Only then can we begin to talk about a truly sustainable youth table tennis system.
