"It sucks to be a Coho.... I'd much rather be a Steelhead."
The reference for this was that the biologist, after cutting open a bunch of salmon (which of course amused the second graders to no end) told us that the Steelhead have the advantage of being able to spawn multiple times before they die. Tomorrow I go to the monthly Rose City Romance Writer's meeting where the topic is - Writing Sex Scenes that Fit your Character AND your Book. Given past blogs about this you can see where I am looking forward to this topic. It is one thing to write about salmon spawning.... and a whole other thing to describe the feelings one of my characters has when the hero inadvertantly (or maybe not) grazes her thigh with his hand. And, unlike salmon... this process can happen to her multiple times without her actually dying. Meanwhile... my creative juices dry up like the dead salmon intestines that the biologist left sitting out on the rock by the creek. Ummmm, so, what happens next? Does my character jump him the hero in her uncontrolled passion? Flirt? Run away like crazy? Does it matter that she is 24 years old rather than 35? I am hoping the speaker, noted author Delilah Marvelle www.delilahmarvelle.com (and really, with a name like that you know her books will be great at describing sex scenes), anyway... hoping she can take me by the hand and help me bring a little more sexiness (if not sex) into my next story. I'll let you know how it goes... hopefully I, and my books, will be more like Steelhead than Coho and survive whenever our next spawning is.
